The recent military conflict in Ukraine, caused by Russia (more preciously by the President Putin), generated a sense of justice against Russia’s action globally but in a westernized manner; western nations with those who are in alliance stepped into economic sanctions onto Russia and support for Ukraine while pro-Russia ones typified by China didn’t come along with them. The sanction was decided quickly after Russia’s militaristic action in Ukraine and it was expected to help the conflict cease.
The expectation backfired eventually. The conflict has been still going on. The sanction struck back to the world outside Russia and its friends; the commodity price kept rising sharply, the supply-chain paralyzed. Russia was quite dominant on global industry by supplying oil, gas, rare earth/metals and key components to semiconductors which is in great demand for realizing connectivity of all the things through internet or IOT. The sanction ironically made us realize their dominance and our dependent on their supply.
Some argues that this is a sign that the world abandons being global and goes back to the previous bloc economy. It seems that a part of the world is starting to be tired of the westernize democracy and leadership given the following three facts:
- the ongoing underground popularity to Donald Trump
- France’s recent presidency election where Marine Le Pen, an ultra-rightest advocating French exit from EU, managed to gain expanded popularity from French people; and
- the Philippine’s long-term fatigue from democratic Presidents, which resulted in a victory of President-elect, Ferdinando Marcos Jr, son of then-Dictatory President Marcos,
I still believe that global cooperation we have raised so far still works and will work better in the future. That said, the method should be renewed. That is, the current dominance of western leadership should be diluted and it should be more diversified. EU should do for EU, the U.S. should do for the U.S. and Asia and Africa should do the same. The new global cooperation may be materialized by accumulation of these bolstered regional cooperation.
Stay firm on their ground, down to earth. Independent on what they can offer on their own and dependent to the world on what they lack. The balance of dependent/independent will be a key to open the door to the new world, well as long as I imagine (or get hallucinated?).
