Rosslyn Capel or Collegiate Chapel of St Matthew is a catholic collegiate church located at the village of Rosslyn, Scotland. It was founded in 1446 AD by William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness, and has been maintained by its decedents until now.
This chapel appears in "The Da Vinci Code" as an important venue in its climax. In addition, there was a movie shooting at this chapel for the book's movie adaptation stared by Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon in 2016.
Knights Templer and the Holy Grail
The book's author, Dan Brown, focused on a legend linking this chapel with Knights Templer for plotting the story's core; the Holy Grail.
Knights Templer is a Catholic military order comprised mainly of cavalry monks. It was established in 1119 AD, and then recognized formally by the papal authorization in 1139 AD. The order was headquartered in a place which was believed to be ruins of the Temple of Solomon in Jerusalem-the Holy Land. Its purpose was to protect christian pilgrimages from attacks by Muslims on the way to Jerusalem (later, the protection was extended to their assets. This is said to be an origin of today's banking system.)
The order was successful politically and financially with huge back-up by the Pope and rulers throughout Europe and Near East, but it started to decline upon Muslim's recapture of Jerusalem in 1187 AD. With the order's several defeats by Muslims and then-French King Philip IV's attempt to destroy the order (to write off debts he owned to the order), the order's grand master as well as its "knights" were arrested and tortured upon disbanding by then-Pope Clement V in 1307 AD. Then, the Knights Templer was demised and annexed to other similar groups.
On the other hand, Scotland, which was politically distanced from Vatican at that time, was not influenced by the papal mandate, so there was no torture onto members of the order. Among them is the founder of Rosslyn Chapel.
Due to its deep relation with Jerusalem, there have been rumors that Knights Templer may have taken the Holy Grail from the Holy Land and kept it till now. Dan Bronwn came up with such an idea as the Chapel has some "relations" with the mystery based on its lineage of the Christendom order. He visited the Chapel several times and began to write the book. In "The Da Vinci Code", Rosslyn Chapel appears in its climax in which the Holy Grail is revealed.
"Green man"
Besides the Freemason-like conspiracy, the chapel's uniqueness appear in its interior decorations. The most eye-opener is the Green man, a decoration of botanic elf in Celtic myth. Typically, the Green man is represented with a human face made of botanic parts; leaves, stems, roots etc., and it can be seen at various sites throughout Europe, but this chapel's one is....quite..
There are several unique interiors but currently taking photos inside is not allowed as the number of visitors surged. You should therefore visit by yourself to take a look.
