I like reading books and visiting book places, too. A friend of mine in Japan noticed my Instagram postings on my Dutch trip and suggested me to visit the public library in Amsterdam “OBA Oosterdok”.
It’s located on the river side around Amsterdam Central Station so I visited on my way back from Delft.
Firstly, I was overwhelmed at its stylish interior design; when I entered into the library, a huge atrium welcomed me. Alongside the atrium, there were Wi-Fi-connected desks installed around on each floor. The bookshelves are organized well with subtle kindness helping visitors look for books they would like to read; a bar light installed on the bookshelves enabling us to see spines of books.
Spaces between bookshelves are enough for a group of people to pass each other at once. A lot of reading booths are installed here and there throughout the library. The library is open to everyone including foreign travelers like me; free visit and free browsing the book. I brought some books from the shelf and read for a while including Japanese books in the booth.
A fascinating part was its cafeteria on the top floor where visitors can taste the Dutch famous Heineken with some foods. The cafeteria has three parts; buffet-style food space, food court where we can order hot meals and above all, bar with a bartender. I went to the food court area and ordered a meal set of plant-based hamburger with chips and a bottle of Heineken. I’m not vegan but wanted to try the veg meat (perhaps “beyond the meat”?). Taste was good enough.
I’d never imagined that I could have alcohol in a public library in Japan: a library is knowledge warehouse to me. In Amsterdam, it is a complex of knowledge and entertainment. Well, the city’s public service is quite nice to me.
