The Netherlands Trip Day 6 (1): Delft

To the south from the Hague, there is a town called Delft, which's famous for the Dutch traditional porcelain "Royal Delft". But the porcelain wasn't my passion to visit there.

From Day 6, my purpose for this trip turned into alchoholic; I went back and forth between Amsterdam and other cities having local craft beer. Delft, combining with Vermeer's brith house (he was born in this town), caught my curiosity to taste its local beer.

Hi, there. Delft beer!

I googled the town's local beer and found a beer pub called Delftse Brouwers Huis, where the beer is flesh from its own brewary. The server lady came to me for order but I wondered what beer was the best out of their choices on the menu. She noticed me undecided and she recommended me a a set of four craft beer. Each cup of the four is smaller than one glass but enjoy comparing the tasts. I rode on it and ordered Dutch croquette together for my lunch.

Yes!
The set was a right choice; all of the four were Delft's craft beer and I enjoyed thick, sour, fruit and smoky ones cup by cup.

And another Yes!
The croquette was in a good balance; crispy outside but creamy inside....The garnish baguette worked good to scoop the cream coming out of the croquette along with cutting with a knife.

Vermeer, where you are born

After big fulfilment with beer and croquette, I visited the Vermeer house where he was born and spent his life. The house itself is now rennovated as Vermeer Centrum Delft exhbiting his masterpieces; actually the museum's exhibitions are copied verson from the originals. The originals are now possessed by various museums across the globe. Instead of the genuineness, the museum helps us understand Vermeer's painting technique and his way to see the world through drawing the pictures.

I'd not known that the famous Girl with a pearl earring has her partner until I came to see her, and I saw an hommage: a black Girl with a pearl earning drawn by an artist loving Vermeer, Jenny Boot.

After I enojyed the Vermeer's world, I went back to Delft train station passing throught a holiday market in front of the church. In Amsterdam, I had a place to go in my mind after Delft....

石州流の流祖

Retrived on 2025/9/3 from https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=54261413 茶道石州流ー流派の名前である「石州」というのは、流祖・片桐石州の名前から来ています。石州が武家出身で、小規模ながら一国の大名であったこと、のちに徳川家の茶道指南役として取り立てられたことから、石州流は「武家茶道」の代名詞として、今日まで伝統が続いています。豊臣と徳川の狭間片桐石州は、もとは貞昌（さだまさ）という名前であり、1605年に摂津茨木（現在の大阪府茨木市）で生を受けました。伯父の名前は、「片桐且元（かつもと）」。豊臣家の重鎮ながら、主君・秀頼とその母・淀殿から徳川との密通を疑われ、命を狙われた武将です。友好関係にあった且元への容赦ない処遇に対し、家康が激怒して大坂への出陣を決意したことから、片桐家は豊臣家滅亡に至る中心的な立場にいたとされています。この時、且元の人質として、貞昌は徳川方の板倉家に預けられていました。小泉藩主、そして「石州へ」豊臣家滅亡後、且元は竜田藩1万石の大名に取り立てられますが、ほどなくして病により死去。長男が家督を継ぐも、1655年、且元から数えて7代目の時代に家系が断絶します。一方、且元の弟、つまり貞昌の父・貞隆は大和小泉藩1万6千国の初代大名となり、貞昌も正式な跡継ぎとして、19歳の時に幕府より「従五位下、石見守」に叙任されます。この官職名をもとに、貞昌は「石州」と呼ばれるようになっていきます。そして1627年、22歳の時に父の死を受け、小泉藩2代当主となりました。幕府の役人として石州はもともと、土木関係の官僚（普請奉行）として幕府に出仕していました。在任中は、主に京都・知恩院の再建や関東や東海地方での水害対策などで手腕を発揮しています。茶道自体は、嗜みとして20歳ごろに桑山宗仙という茶人から学び始めました。宗仙の死後、28歳のころに知恩院再建のために京都に居を移した後、様々な茶人との交流を通じて自らの茶道を磨き、徐々に茶人としての名声を高めていくこととなります。 44歳の時、3代将軍・徳川家光より声がかかり、将軍家が所有する膨大かつ貴重な茶道具の分類・整理を担います。この功績が諸大名の耳にも届き、茶人としての石州に注目が集まるようにな...

石州流の流祖②　石州の死後

徳川将軍家の茶道指南役として取り立てられ、武家茶人としては最高峰に上り詰めた片桐石州ですが、意外なことにその子孫は茶の湯を受け継ぐことはありませんでした。血筋ではなく人柄が受け継ぐもの石州自身は、特に自分の子息に茶道を継がせようとは考えていなかったようです。それよりも、自分がこれぞと思う人物へと伝授することを重視していたようです。千利休の血筋が伝える千家（表千家、裏千家、武者小路千家）とは違い、利休の長男・千道安の教えを受けた桑山宗仙を介して侘茶を学んだ自身の経緯に鑑み、石州は血筋ではなく茶の湯を深めていきたい人が嗜めばいい、ということを重視していました。自らの茶を広めよう、茶で名声をなそうということにはあまり興味を持っていなかったようです。その分、教わりたいという人には惜しみなく自分の極意を伝え、伝えた後はその人の自主性に任せる。そのために、大名家や仏門の人々、自分の家臣から皇族に至るまで、幅広い人物が石州の師事を仰ぎ、学んでいきました。片桐家自体も、石州から数えて8代目の貞信が新石州流を興しましたが定着していません。また、戦後は様々な変遷を経て、石州流宗家を名乗る2派（片桐家が興した「石州流茶道宗家」と石州の教えを守ってきた家臣家を軸に据えた「茶道石州流本家」）が存在しています。共存共栄石州流としては、現在は大まかに、２つの宗家を家元として仰ぐグループ、石州が父親の菩提を弔うために建立した慈光院（奈良県大和郡山市）を中心としたグループ、石州の墓がある京都大徳寺・芳春院を宋元とするグループに分けられます。さらに、仙台藩の流れをくむ清水派や島根・松江藩の松平不味が始めた不味派（不味流）など、独立して継承されていったものもあります。このように石州流は、石州の名のもとにたくさんの派閥が並立する稀有な流派ではあるのですが、根底にある教えや本質は共有しつつ、様式や価値観を異にするグループ同士が共存共栄、切磋琢磨する形で武家茶道としての伝統を受け継いできています。こうしてみると、石州の子孫ではなく、石州の茶に触れて感銘を受けた片桐家の家臣や多くの武将、茶人がそれぞれに残していったものが、独立して発展を遂げていったという歴史が、石州流が茶道の世界において独特の存在感を放っている背景なのだと思っています。茶道の世界において、「石州流に属している」というと、もの...

The Netherlands Trip Day 6 (2): Amsterdam Library

I like reading books and visiting book places, too. A friend of mine in Japan noticed my Instagram postings on my Dutch trip and suggested me to visit the public library in Amsterdam “ OBA Oosterdok ”. It’s located on the river side around Amsterdam Central Station so I visited on my way back from Delft. Firstly, I was overwhelmed at its stylish interior design; when I entered into the library, a huge atrium welcomed me. Alongside the atrium, there were Wi-Fi-connected desks installed around on each floor. The bookshelves are organized well with subtle kindness helping visitors look for books they would like to read; a bar light installed on the bookshelves enabling us to see spines of books. Spaces between bookshelves are enough for a group of people to pass each other at once. A lot of reading booths are installed here and there throughout the library.
