The Netherlands bore varous artists throughout the history and Rijskmuseum has a lot of collections by those Dutch genius. I'd known several masterpieces by Vermeer but I also came to know Rembrandt from reading a Japanese book called "Gairo-wo-yuku(街路をゆく)" or "Walking the road" by a famous Japanese writer Shiba Ryotaro (司馬遼太郎 1923-1996). Shiba is famous for historical novels but he also travelled around the world and left a series of travel essays. He'd been to the Netherlands twice in 1980s in the middle of the Cold War and wrote about his experiences in one of the essays. In his book, he mentioned his enthusiasm to Rembrandt's paintings, which sparked my curiosity. Fortunately, Rijskmuseum has the genuine "Night Watch", one of the famous paintings by Rembrandt, about which Shiba intensively mentioned in his book.
The "Night Watch" was under its renovation work; it was hung in a renovation room in the museum's oval room. Well, it was a bit far to take a cloer look and there were people like me trying to take a photo. The painting itself was quite big so it took me much time to see the whole parts of the composions.
The oval room has one of the Vermeer's masterpieces: The Milkmaid. Unlike the Night Watch, this painting was small and compact, so I could come closer to it for enjoying its details. Later, I learned that the other masterpiece by Vermeer: Girl with a Pearl Earring is exhibited in a different museum so I decided to discover it on my trip in the Netherlands this time
Simply put, this museum is a giant. Besides the famous paintings raised above, a number of arts are exhibited here and there across the museum, so it took me half a day to finish everything and leave the museum.....
Full of quilty...for lunch
I starved, and decided to go for a lunch. The museum is in a park called and I saw several streat restaurants serving snscks and...the Beer.
I bought chips or french fry topped with mayonnaise over a glass of beer. Diving into the world of carbohydrates....Yummy with guilty.
After the lunch, I caught a tram going to a shopping mall at Amstel station; I forgot to bring bathtowel and other amenities with me on this trip,.so I needed to buy these stuff.
Action is one of the discount supernarket chains dealing with those daily neccesities and I bought the towels, slippers for walking inside hostel and some paper plates and cutreries for cooking myself.I got back to Overtoom and went again.to Jumbo supermarket to buy my dinner. As I always behave in a supermaket, I went to find discounted gloceries, usually piled in wagon with "◯% off" label. Wow, i got chopped beef for hamburger steaks, mushroom and salad mix vegetable. All of them were 50 percent discount. What a treasure hunting! Oh, I'm positively kind of a reasonable person enjoying this housewife/husband things lol.
The Netherlands has long daylight: it was still light around 8 pm. Finished my dinner and fell half asleep untill the Sun set down completly.
Continuing into Day 3.
