This year, I went to the Netherlands.
You may ask why the Netherlands?
I always chose a place to go based on the facts;
・I’m yet to visit
・financially reasonable air tickets are available; and
・the place shall be physically distant from Japan (so that I can enjoy the long vacation)
In most cases, I prefer Europe to other areas because I majored in European history for the bachelor degree at my university and I’m interested in arts coming from the medieval Europe.
In this context, the Netherlands is a place hitting my heart this time.
To me, the Netherlands is a place of “Huis Ten Bosch”, a theme park for experiencing Dutch cultures, based in Nagasaki, Kyushu. Lending to it, Japan and the Netherlands have been in a good relationship since 1600s AD. At the time, the Shogun at Tokugawa Shogunate (well, the Shogun is a samurai prime minister appointed by the Emperor and the Shogunate is the Diet or Parliament operated by samurais) decided to shut relationship with foreign nations to avoid social instability stemming from the Catholic Missionary. The Netherlands was an exception since it was founded on Protestant which Missionary was not necessary. The Shogunate decided to keep the relation with the Dutch only in Dejima islands, Nagasaki, where the Dutch vessels came and Japan imported items and ideas, knowledge from them. Throughout the Japanese history, what the Dutch introduced, especially medicines, was a key to westernize Japan.
Some of the famous painters are also from the Netherlands; Gogh, Vermeer and Rembrandt. The nation has a lot of museums exhibiting genuine master pieces by those painters. If you like arts, the Netherlands may be the place to go; you will forget the time to explore all of the exhibitions across the nation.
Belgium, the neighbor to the Dutch, is famous for beer in Japan. The Nethelands’ are not that famous in Japan but I actually enjoyed some local beer on my travel this time.
Overall, my travel in the Netherlands this time was comprised of the following two purposes:
・Enjoying genuine maser pieces by the famous painters from the medieval-modern era; and
・Tasting pints of local beer
I will write separately about my experiences on my travel separately based on the purposes above.
