A friend of mine ran for the municipal election for the mayor in my town and I joined his campaign as its support for these several weeks. The election was made just yesterday; the result is that my friend and the other candidate failed and the incumbent mayor was re-elected with an overwhelming number of votes for him.
My friend’s agenda is quite straightforward, saying that the gentrification backed up by massive urban developments should be abandoned since it could result in massive destruction on its ecosystem triggering a climate change and an eco-friendly system can be adapted alternatively, typified by a municipal zero-waste center prompting residents to re-use, re-cycle the garbage. One of the things I was interested in is his attempt to reduce food waste by 30 percent with having people done a compost and farmers use it for firming; residents can have a free/almost-free access to flesh crops and they will be free of price hike in the future.
He also argues that “care” for people should be expanded locally; the pandemic reminded him of an urgent need to ameliorate local medical care especially to those who aren’t accessible to those easily, e.g. people with stress/mind disorders, patients in need of physical supports(illness and/or handicaps). He simply said: No one should be left unnoticed, everyone should be cared. The municipal authority sometimes shrinks the public support for its cost beneficiation but he clearly raises “NO” to it as he thinks the “public” embrace everyone and everything that the municipal administration should be responsible.
The care is expanded to education in local schools. He defines the education as “common”: everyone is a teacher and a student. “Education” runs one-way only from the top (teachers/adults) to the bottom (students/children) but in his way any learning shall be two-ways; students can be teachers to adults. These interactive systems regardless of age, gender and races etc. will be the way better property that our city can have.
That said, people voted for the incumbent mayor to be re-elected, who’s a big fan of the massive developments and cost beneficiation. People I met during the campaign said they would agree with my friend’s manifestos but…it seems too noble for them to vote for him. They are struggling for making afford to everyday lives and expect an instant result from the mayor and its council.
We were able to dig out some positivity from the campaign: high-school teenagers who are under age to have votes showed strong and favorable feedbacks to us. It might take a bit further time but,,yes future isn’t determined yet. It looks directed to uncertainty so far but the generation waiting for being adults are now standing by us to say “YES” to the future we’ve been about to build.
It’s still dim but a light of future is lightened for sure.
